A relatively new, but dedicated team of RMIT students who program autonomous robots to play soccer.

The Team

Current Team Members

Prof John Thangarajah

John has been an academic supervisor for RedbackBots since it's inception, John is a Professor and the Director of Research of CIAIRI (Center for Industrial AI Research & Innovation) at RMIT.

Dr Timothy Wiley

Currently a member of the Executive Committee for the RoboCup SPL, with a current term of 2024-2028. Previously serving as member of the RoboCup Technical Committee from 2017 - 2022, Tim has been an academic supervisor and team lead for RedbackBots since it's inception. Tim is a Lecturer in the Artificial Intelligence Discipline at RMIT.

Sam Griffiths

Joined in 2022, Sam works on various components of our codebase from communication and goal alignment to our latest VR project, GameSight. Sam is also currently also a member of the Robocup 2025 organising comittee (OC). Sam is studying a Bachelor of Computer/Network Engineering and Computer Science..

Tom Ellis

After joining the team at the end of 2022, and serving on the 2024 RoboCup Organising Committee, Tom is now part of the 2025 RoboCup Technical Committee. Tom does a little bit of everything on the team but is currently helping with GameSight. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Computer Science.

Murray Owens

Joining the team early 2023, Murray worked on the Visual Referee Challenge for his minor thesis. Murray now leads the Behaviour team, working to improve the robot's soccer skills. He is currently undertaking a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and Aviation.

Luke Mullan

Joining at the start of 2023 in his final year of uni, Luke, who has now graduated, volunteers his time in helping the team bring new and exciting updates to the robot's skills and behaviours. He currently works full-time as a Software Developer.
